Step Changes in Weatherability with

Kynar Aquatec® Latex

An extreme world calls for extreme materials. Kynar 500® PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) based coatings have a track record of over 50 years of superior weatherability. Kynar Aquatec® based coatings combine the durability of the PVDF backbone of Kynar 500® with a water-based formulation that can be field applied. Existing acrylic binder-based formulations can only go so far before environmental degradation will lead to color fade or gloss loss. In order to make a step change in weatherability, the polymer backbone must be changed. The PVDF backbone found in Kynar Aquatec® latexes allows for significant performance improvements in exterior coatings. In this talk, we will present our 15+ year outdoor weathering data and give formulation guidance for obtaining the highest performing coatings possible..

About the host

Kelly Lutz is a Research Scientist at Arkema, Inc. in the Applications team of the Kynar® Coatings Business Unit in King of Prussia, PA. Prior to joining the Kynar® Coatings team, she was a process chemist for Arkema’s Organic Peroxide division and also held a position at PPG as a resin synthesis chemist. Kelly is a small molecule chemist at heart, obtaining her PhD from Northwestern University in Organic Chemistry, where she studied natural product synthesis and reaction methodology development. She has been able to parlay her previous experiences into a deeper understanding of the chemistry that affects the different components of coatings, ultimately leading to developing high performance coatings with excellent weatherability.
